Hurricane Ivan over the Gulf of Mexico, on 15th September 2004 at 1345 GMT. Florida is to the right of Ivan. Hurricanes are enormous rotating storm systems in which winds can reach over 240 kilometres per hour (kph). They can cause immense damage if they hit built-up areas, but lose energy quickly over land. At the time this image was taken, Ivan was classified as a category 4 hurricane, producing winds of 225 kph. Image taken by the MODIS instrument on board NASA's Aqua satellite.
