The tsetse is a major vector of sleeping sickness in humans & nagana in animals, spreading the causative, parasitic Trypansoma sp. protozoa. About thirty different species of tsetse fly live in various habitats in Africa, each feeding on blood by puncturing the skin with specially-adapted mouthparts. Unlike most flies the tsetse gives birth to live larvae which immediately pupate. The female nurtures one larva at a time, totalling 8-10 in a lifetime. Magnification: x2 at 35mm size.
