The intervertebral discs separate the bones of the spine (vertebrae) from each other and cushion them. If one becomes displaced and puts pressure on surrounding nerves, it can cause back pain and even paralysis. Bed rest is the best treatment, although surgery may be required if the symptoms are severe.
