Broken hip. X-ray of an 82-year-old woman's hip, showing a fracture (just above centre) of part of the femur (thigh bone). The fractured area is one of the bony protrusions called trochanters, found just below the femur's head (upper right). There are two trochanters on the femur, one on the inner side of the bone (lesser trochanter, fractured here) and one on the outer side (upper left, greater trochanter). The neck of the femur, seen between the trochanters and the head of the femur, was previously fractured and repaired with pins (bright white). Lesser trochanter fractures are rare, usually occurring in elderly osteoporotic women. Further surgical pinning will be required.
