Candida albicans fungus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of cells of the yeast- like fungus Candida albicans. This fungus is a cause of thrush (candidiasis). It is normally present on human skin and on the mucous membranes of the mouth, respiratory and intestinal tracts and the vagina. The normal human bacterial microflora will usually prevent an infection taking hold. Antibiotics or a reduced immune response can suppress this effect, causing an infection. Common candidiasis infections in humans include oral thrush, vaginal thrush and nappy rash. Magnification: x850 at 6x7cm size. x1450 at 4x5"~LANDSCAPE"
