Poppy. Close-up of the reproductive structures of a poppy (Meconopsis sp.). Around the centre are the female reproductive parts, known as the carpel. The carpel consists of an ovary (not seen) and styles, which end in the rounded stigmas. Outside of the carpel are the male reproductive parts, the stamen. Each stamen is comprised of a stalk-like filament and a pollen bearing rounded anther. Pollen lands on the stigmas and travels down the inside of the style to fertilise the ovary.
