Interferons are proteins produced by white blood cells as part of the immune response to invading pathogens, especially viruses. They prompt neighbouring cells to produce protective enzymes to stop the proliferation of the pathogen. Interferon also activates other cells of the immune system, including macrophages and natural killer cells.
