Mescaline hallucinogenic drug, molecular model. Mescaline is a hallucinogenic drug, produced from the dried tops (buttons) of the peyote cactus (Lophophora williamsii) that is native to Mexico and Southwestern USA. Mescaline produces feelings of euphoria and an altered perception of time, space and colour. It was extensively used by Aztecs and Native Americans in religious ceremonies, but is now illegal as it has become a drug of abuse. Mescaline's chemical formula is C11H17NO3. Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour-coded: carbon (C, grey), hydrogen (H, turquoise), nitrogen (N, blue) and oxygen (O, red).
