Cladonia portentosa, a fructose lichen common on moors, heaths and sand dunes. This lichen forms patches among heather stems and on bare ground. The many-branched stems are hollow and the tips point in all directions. The spore-producing structures are uncommon, but when they do appear they are brown and form at the tips of the branches. C. portentosa is the commonest British insreindeer mossins type of lichen.
