Spain is the arid land in the centre and east of the peninsula. It is separated from France in the north by Andorra and the Pyrenees mountain range. The east coast borders the Mediterranean Sea. In the south, Gibraltar and the Straits of Gibraltar separate the Iberian Peninsula from Africa. The vegetated area to the southwest of Spain is Portugal.
