The patches of yellow mark the summit of volcanic cones that are part of this ancient lava field, known as Harrat Al Birk. It is located in southern Saudi Arabia, on the country's Red Sea coastline (lower left). The age of lava fields in the Arabian Peninsula range from 2 million to 30 million years old. Eroded rock strata and cliffs are seen at upper right. The area shown in this image is around 60 kilometres wide. The image data was obtained on 18 April 2003, by the Landsat 7 satellite.
