Home Reef, a new island in Tonga, satellite image. North is at top. The new island is at centre left, masked by a bright cloud of steam. It formed in mid-2006 through the eruptions of the previously submarine volcano Home Reef. The eruption produced extensive rafts of floating pumice rock, which drifted northeast from the island. The pumice is the grey expanse to the northeast of the island of Late. The Vava'u archipelago is at centre right. This image was taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on the Aqua Earth observation satellite on 10th August 2006.
