The straight lines fencing the fields are windbreaks of trees, planted to protect the crops from the winds that sweep across this flat, exposed landscape. The round areas (some at lower centre) are some of the many lakes and ponds in the area. The area, which is close to the city of Komsomolets, is near the Russian border. The image data was obtained on 14 April 2002, by the Landsat 7 satellite.
