The suit is designed to keep out most particles with a diameter larger than 1 micron (a millionth of a metre). These suits were used by the authorities in Oskarshamn, Sweden, in May 2006, when dead and dying tufted ducks were found around the lakes here in Simpevarp. An exclusion zone was set up around the area. It was later confirmed that the birds had died from avian flu. There are fears that the deadly H5N1 strain of avian flu may cause an epidemic in humans, killing millions worldwide.
