DNA analysis of Peruvian mummy. Researcher carrying out DNA analysis of a mummy's tooth using gel electrophoresis to separate out the components of the DNA and identify the genetic code. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) can sometimes be recovered from ancient human remains. These remains are being studied to aid understanding of the genetics of the Peruvian pre-Hispanic population compared to today's population. Mummification, where the remains are preserved by dessication in a dry climate, helps preserve the DNA. Photographed at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, Rome, Italy.
