James Bryan Herrick (1861-1954), American doctor. In 1912, he was the first to study the obstruction of the coronary arteries; which is now the major cause of death in the developed world. In 1910, he studied sickle cell anaemia. Herrick's further work lead him to be the first to use an electrocardiograph (ECG) to diagnose the presence of an acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) in a living patient.
