Calbraith Perry Rodgers (1879-1912), US aviator, standing next to twin boys sitting on the wings of a biplane. Rodgers became interested in aviation in 1911, and by August of that year had obtained his flying license. He then attempted to win a prize for flying from coast to coast across the USA. He achieved the journey in 70 stops, carrying the first transcontinental US Mail pouch with him, but took longer than the stipulated 30 days. He died on 3 April 1912 on a test flight, when his plane flew into a flock of birds and crashed into the ocean. Photograph from the Bain News Service.
