Caleb Williams Saleeby (1878-1940), British eugenicist, sitting at a desk. Saleeby qualified as a doctor, but then became a journalist and author, writing books and (from 1924) broadcasting on medical subjects, especially that of eugenics. Eugenics is the theory that human society can be improved by intervening in human heredity, usually by controlling who can reproduce and who cannot. Saleeby was a member of the National Birthrate Commission. He was also the founder and Chairman of the Sunlight League in 1924, aimed at promoting the benefits of sunbathing. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. The photographs date from the 1890s to the 1930s.
