Frederick Soddy (1877-1956), British radiochemist and Nobel laureate. Soddy's discoveries contributed to the understanding of radioactivity, and his work on radioactive decay won him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1921. After graduating from Oxford he spent several years in Canada, working with Ernest Rutherford to prove that radioactive elements decayed into other elements, releasing alpha, beta and gamma radiation. On his return to Britain he showed uranium decays to radium, and furthered the understanding of isotopes.
