Elmer Ambrose Sperry (1860-1930), US inventor. Sperry studied at Cornell, New York, USA, and then moved to Chicago in 1880. He later worked in Washington DC (1900) and New York (1910). During his career, he worked on electrochemical techniques, diesel engines, and ship and aircraft devices. His compasses and his high-intensity arc lamp were used by the US Navy. This photograph, which was taken in the period from the 1890s to the 1930s, is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
