Edward James Stone (1831-1897), British astronomer. Stone's most important work was his observations of solar and lunar parallax at Greenwich, and his two great star catalogues, based on his work in South Africa and at the Radcliffe Observatory in Oxford. He was Chief Assistant at the Royal Greenwich Observatory (1860-1870), His/Her Majesty's Astronomer at the Cape of Good Hope (1870-1879), and Radcliffe Observer at the University of Oxford (1879-1897). He was President of the Royal Astronomical Society (1882-1884) and was awarded its Gold Medal in 1869.
