Bela Schick (1877-1967), Hungarian-born American paediatrician. Schick had studied immunity problems and coined the term 'allergy' whilst at the University of Vienna, where he remained until 1923. He then emigrated to New York to become director of the Paediatric Department of Mount Sinai Hospital. He made important discoveries regarding scarlet fever, tuberculosis and nutrition but is perhaps most famous for developing the Schick test, a test for susceptibility to diphtheria. Schick coordinated a five-year campaign, which virtually eliminated the disease. Photographed in 1938.
