Jose Lopez Uraga (1810-1885), Mexican general. Uraga fought in many wars during a turbulent time in Mexico's history, including the Mexican-US War (1846-1848). He lost his left leg in combat, and it was replaced with a wooden one (seen here). He was also involved in the French Intervention in Mexico (1861-1867), during which he defected to the French. He defected in 1863, shortly before the French-backed Habsburg prince Maximilian, from Austria, became Emperor of Mexico. Emperor Maximilian was overthrown and executed in 1867. Photographed between 1850 and 1880.
