Norton Zinder (b.1928), US geneticist. Zinder graduated from Columbia University, New York, and became Professor of Genetics at Rockefeller University in 1964. Zinder's research started in looking for sexual conjugation in the Salmonella bacterium, conjugation having already been seen in E.coli by Lederberg. Zinder's attempts to observe conjugation actually led to the discovery of bacterial transduction, the process of the transfer of genetic material from one bacterium to another through a phage particle. Photographed in 1964.
