C. neoformans causes cryptococcosis, a local infection that usually becomes generalized, its most common feature being a form of meningitis. The yeast may be isolated from soil although it is most often found in pidgeon droppings. The point of entry in humans is usually the lung, with spread to other organs & sites such as the meninges around the brain. Infection most commonly occurs in immuno- compromised persons where underlying conditions include sarcoidosis, Hodgkin's disease and AIDS. Magnification: x 4,500 at 35mm size.
