Proctitis. Coloured barium enema X-ray of the abdomen of a male patient, showing proctitis of the rectum. The rectum is at bottom centre (dark grey), the end of the large intestine (colon, grey/green) seen winding around the abdomen from centre left to upper centre to lower right. Proc- titis is an inflamed rectum, here diagnosed by granularity of the rectal mucosa (wall) & widened presacral space. Symptoms are soreness, bleeding, and sometimes a discharge. It may be associated with ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease or injury. A barium enema is introduced into the rectum to make it and the colon visible on X-ray.
