Sounds of different frequencies are transmitted to the headphones from an audiometer and the subject indicates whether he can hear them by pressing the button held in his hand. His hearing thresholds at each frequency is plotted on a audiogram (on screen at lower left). This shows whether he can hear less than normal at certain frequencies and if his hearing loss is great enough to require hearing aids or cochlea implants.
