Heart pacemaker under the skin. A pacemaker is a device that sends an electrical signal to the heart muscle, causing it to contract. A pacemaker can be implanted when the patient's heartbeat is irregular. It either sends continuous regular signals to mimic a healthy heartbeat, or only sends a signal when it detects that the heart's own biological pacemaker has missed a beat.
