Subclavian artery, anatomical artwork. Historical anatomical artwork of the position of the subclavian artery as seen from above the clavicle (collar bone). This region is known as the supraclavicular fossa. The skin has been cut open and folded back to reveal this space, with its muscles (red) and nerves (white). In front (at left) is the sternomastoid muscle, with the scalenus muscles behind (at centre). In the space in between are the nerves of the brachial plexus. Just below the nerves, next to the first rib, is the subclavian artery (bright red). The clavicle is seen at the bottom of the incision.
