Brain anatomy, 14th century artwork. At left, the cranial vault (top of the skull) and the outer brain membrane has been removed, revealing the pia mater, one of the inner brain membranes. At right, all the brain membranes have been removed and details of the folds (sulci and gyri) of the cerebrum are shown, along with holes for nerves and ventricles. The artwork is from Anathomia (1345), by the Italian anatomist Guido da Vigevano. The brain anatomy drawings in this manuscript are considered the first accurate human neuroanatomical drawings.
