Operating table. Surgical operating table used in Glasgow, Scotland by Baron Joseph Lister (1827- 1912), Scottish surgeon. In 1865 Lister was the first physician to implement successful antiseptic methods during surgery. He used carbolic acid (crude phenol solution) and steam as antiseptics for instruments and dressings. He also used a carbolic spray during surgery to prevent direct infection of the patient.
