Head and neck arteries, CT scan. Coloured 3-D computed tomography (CT) scan showing the arteries of the head and neck in frontal view. The heart pumps oxygenated blood out of the aorta (bottom middle) and transports it to the head via the carotid arteries (middle centre). The subclavian arteries (left and right of centre) transports blood to the upper limbs. The pulmonary arteries are visible as a dense network of vessels on either side of the aorta and supply deoxygenated blood to the lungs. This image was produced using a multi-slice CT scanner, which uses a thin X-ray beam to scan around the patient to create 'slices' of the body. OsiriX medical imaging software was used to reconstruct the slices into animated 3-D images of the body.
