Mitosis. Fluorescent light micrograph of a cell during the anaphase stage of mitosis (cell division). The cell has been tagged with fluorescent markers to reveal internal structures. Chromosomes are red, the mitotic spindles pulling them apart are green, and peroxisomes are blue. At this stage, the chromosomes have separated into chromatids (identical halves of a chromosome), and are being pulled to opposite sides of the cell by the mitotic spindle. Once separated, the cell begins to divide into two complete daughter cells, identical to the cell from which they formed. Peroxisomes are organelles that clean up toxic substances in cells.
