Telescope at the Lick Observatory, Mount Hamilton in California, USA. This is the Shane telescope, a 120 inch reflector telescope built in 1959 and named after Donald Shane, who was the Lick Observatory director during its design and construction. It is constructed around the primary mirror, which is 120 inches in diameter, and light is focused at three different points along the length of the telescope. The Lick Observatory was completed in 1888 at an altitude of 1280 metres and was the world's first permanent mountaintop observatory. Its location provided excellent viewing conditions for years until light pollution from the nearby city of San Jose began to interfere with results.
