Jodrell Bank. Historic photograph of Bernard Lovell (left, leaning on table) with J.G. Davies in the control room of the 250 foot (76 metre) diameter Mark 1 radio telescope at Jodrell Bank, near Manchester, England. The picture was taken in late 1957, shortly after the Mark 1 - the world's first giant dish radio telescope - was commissioned. Lovell was the driving force behind the building of the telescope, part of which is visible through the window. After improvement work in 1970/71 it was designated the Mark 1A.
