Jupiter, the fifth planet from the sun and the largest in the solar system. The planet has a rocky core but is mostly composed of liquid and gaseous hydrogen and helium. The patterns on the surface are caused by turbulence in the upper atmosphere. The Great Red Spot, at lower right, is an anticyclonic storm that has lasted for at least 340 years. This image was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST).
