Russian space memorabilia. A pack of survival rations carried by Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin on the world's first manned space flight. The packs seen here contain a protein mixture (foreground), rolls of 'pep pills' and a chocolate bar in aluminium foil (rear). Although Gagarin's flight lasted only 108 minutes, there was some worry over where exactly he would land. He therefore carried a survival pack, including a butane camping stove, in case he had to wait for rescue. This package is just one of the 200 items offered for sale at Sotheby's New York on 11 December 1993 at a special auction of Soviet space memorabilia.
