Aircraft distrails. Satellite image of aircraft dissipation trails (distrails) in clouds over the southern USA. The distrails are the dark streaks in the clouds, which occur as the heat of aircraft exhaust gases cause the clouds to evaporate. A distrail is the opposite of a contrail. Image obtained on 29 January 2007, by the MODIS senor on the Terra satellite.
