Vickers Vimy biplane. Piloted by John Alcock and Arthur Whitten, it made the first non-stop transatlantic flight between 14-15 June 1919. The 3000 kilometre flight took 16 hours. It was originally an RAF bomber used in the First World War. The biplane flew from Newfoundland, Canada to the coast of Ireland. Here it was to hit the ground and sink into a bog. The plane is now on display in the Science Museum, London.
