Scanning electron micrograph of the antennae of a springtail (Collembola). The surface layer of the exoskeleton appears highly textured & the antennae are covered by numerous sensory hairs. The springtails are an order of primitive wingless insects characterized by a forked appendage at the tip of the body used in leaping. This appendage is bent forward beneath the body & when released snaps sharply down & back, projecting the animal into the air. Magnification: x2000 (at 10x8 size) and x240 (at 35mm size).
