Butterfly wing scale. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a scale from a butterfly's wing. The fine grooves seen on this scale are responsible for the iridescent colours seen on the butterfly's wings. The tiny grooves cause interference and diffraction of the light reflected from the scale's surface. The bright colours of butterflies' wings are used to scare attackers and for attracting mates.
