Dark green fritillary butterfly (Argynnis aglaja). This butterfly has just emerged from pupating and is drying out its wings. The caterpillars of this butterfly hibernate throughout the winter and emerge in the spring to feed on violet plants (Viola sp.). They then pupate in undergrowth such as bramble, as seen here. The males mate with the females immediately after emerging from their cocoons. Photographed in June, on Braunton Burrows, Devon, UK.
