Stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa) buried in sand on the seabed. The curved mouth is seen at lower right. The camouflage makes it indistinguishable when it buries itself in sand or hides amonst rocks and reefs to ambush its prey. The stonefish feeds on crustaceans or smaller fish and swallows them whole. It has venomous fins on its back as a form of defence. Photographed off Maratua Island, in the Sulawesi Sea, Indonesia.
