European hare (Lepus europaeus) hidden amongst grass in a poppy field. The European hare is native to northern, central and western Europe and western Asia. It inhabits open country, feeding on grass and herbs during the summer and twigs and bark in the winter. It is preyed upon by by a variety of predators, including golden eagles, red foxes and wolves. In Europe, populations are declining due to changing farming practices. Photographed in Lazio, Italy.
