Petroglyph depiciting the Birdman culture at Orongo village on the seaward side of the rim of the crater of Rano Kau volcano at the south western tip of Easter Island. This important ceremonial village played a pivotal role in the spiritual lives of the Easter Islanders. Looking across the sea to the Motu islets, where there was a large nesting colony of Frigate birds (venerated by the islanders) Orongo became the site of an elaborate Birdman culture and the stage for initiation rites of passage and ceremonies.
