Church of our Lady before Tyn, (Kostel Panny Marie Pred Tynem) in Staromestske namesti (Old Town Square) (also spelt Stare Mesto), Prague, Czech Republic. Steeples of the church with a puppet / doll stall in the foreground. Dominating the Old Town Square are the magnificent steeples of this historic church. The present Gothic Church was started in 1365 and soon became associated with the reform movement in Bohemia. From the early 15th century until 1620 Tyn was the main Hussite Church in Prague. It was completed during the reign of George of Podebrady (1436-71), the one and only Hussite King of Bohemia. He adorned the high stone gable with a statue of himself and a giant gilded kalich (chalice), the mascot of all Hussite sects. After the Protestants' crushing defeat at the Battle of Bila Hora, the chalice was melted down to provide a newly ensconced statue of the Virgin Mary with a golden halo. The Danish astrologer Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) is buried in Tyn Church.
