A Nyangatom woman with ornamental scarring on her stomach. The scars are made with a razor and then infected with a mixture of ash and cow dung to produce the raised welts. Typical of her tribe, she is wearing multiple layers of beads in necklaces, an elaborately beaded calfskin skirt and iron bracelets and amulets. Her hair is made red with ochre and mud. The Nyangatom or Bume are a Nilotic tribe of semi-nomadic pastoralists who live along the banks of the Omo River in south-western Ethiopia.
