An Ethiopian wrapped in a traditional homespun cotton shawl picks qat from his smallholding in the Chercher Mountains. Qat is a mild stimulant. Many Moslems in the Horn of Africa and the Middle East, especially Yemen, chew the young leaves of the evergreen shrub. It is a valuable cash crop for Ethiopian farmers living in the highlands.
