A Himba girl carries home milk in a beautifully made woven container made from local grasses, which is plastered with animal fat and ochre on the outside to prevent it leaking. The bodies of Himba women and girls gleam from a mixture of red ochre, butterfat and herbs. Their long hair is styled in the traditional Himba way. This girl's large, round necklace, studded with white beads, is called ombwari and is worn by both sexes. The Himba are Herero-speaking Bantu nomads who live in the harsh, dry but starkly beautiful landscape of remote northwest Namibia.
