A Himba youth rides to market on a donkey. His hair is styled in a long plait, known as ondatu. Once married, he will split the ondatu into two plaits and keep them covered. His heavy white-beaded necklace, ombwari, will have been made for him by his mother. They are worn by both men and women. The Himba are Herero-speaking Bantu nomads who live in the harsh, dry but starkly beautiful landscape of remote northwest Namibia.
